SPF SEPAG Update: March 18 Meeting with District Leadership

Dear Parent and Caregivers,

On March 18, the SEPAG Executive Board met with district leadership, including the Director of Special Services and the Superintendent, to share feedback gathered from parents and caregivers throughout the school year and to discuss opportunities for continued improvement.

This conversation focused on system-level themes that have come up consistently across SEPAG meetings, emails, and parent discussions.

Clarity and Consistency in 504s, IEPs, and IHPs - Families continue to look for greater consistency across schools, clear timelines, and consistent communication. The district acknowledged these as important goals.

Executive Functioning (EF) - The district shared EF support is built into instruction and varies by student. SEPAG emphasized the importance of helping families better understand how supports are implemented across grade levels.

Dyslexia Supports & Literacy - Families appreciated recent presentations. The district acknowledged that while supports exist, communication to families can be improved regarding screening timelines, interventions, and available supports.

Transition Planning (Ages 14+) and DVRS - Families are highly interested in transition services. SEPAG emphasized the need for consistent and accurate communication about DVRS and Pre-ETS programs.

Communication and Family Experience - Clear, timely, and consistent communication remains a key theme. Even small improvements can significantly improve family experience.

Equity and Consistency Across Schools - The district is working to improve alignment and share best practices across schools.

Mental Health and School Avoidance - Supports are individualized. SEPAG shared that families would benefit from clearer guidance and expectations.

Out-of-District Placements - The process can be complex and timelines vary. Families are encouraged to stay in close communication with case managers.

Inclusion in District Events - SEPAG highlighted the importance of visible inclusion at ceremonies and events.

District Budget Context -The district is managing increased enrollment and rising costs, particularly healthcare.

Moving Forward - SEPAG will continue to share feedback, advocate for improvements, and support families. Families are encouraged to stay engaged and reach out to SEPAG for support.

REMINDER - The March Scotch Plains-Fanwood SEPAG meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 26, 2026, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Scotch Plains Library. This meeting is for parents and caregivers only and will be held in a hybrid format, allowing for both in-person attendance and remote participation via Google Meet. This is a vital opportunity to provide feedback to the district on how to improve the daily experience of students with special needs. You can join the meeting virtually at https://meet.google.com/eib-xzbd-ufa.

During the second half of the meeting, the SEPAG will also be hosting a Parent & Caregiver Connection Social. This is not just for families navigating IEPs and 504 plans, but also those wondering if their child may need one. Please join the SEPAG for a relaxed, judgment-free gathering where parents and caregivers can meet, connect, and breathe. This is a space to share experiences, feel re-energized, and find your people.
